On June 30, 2009, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) announced that AWS Truewind (AWST) will be one of five companies conducting studies for the Great Lakes Wind Project. The project was approved by the board of directors with a five million dollar cap and allows for up to five year contracts with the companies.
The Great Lakes Wind Project is part of New York State’s goal to employ all renewable energy resources available, including offshore wind development, to empower the state to meet its amiably high renewable energy standard. Because of the many variables associated with the project, the New York Power Authority has chosen to employ five companies in order to create a broader pool of expertise.
“Having broad-based teams of technical consultants gives the Power Authority the ability to choose from among a cadre of wind power experts to assist with studying the diverse subjects we need to understand to evaluate the viability of the Great Lakes Offshore Wind Project,” said Richard Kessel, CEO and President of NAPA. “In order to realize Governor Paterson’s ambitious “45 by 15” clean energy goals, we must be prepared to gather and assess information on a wide range of critical issues and these firms were selected for their ability to do just that for NYPA” adds Kessel.
AWS Truewind will provide a number of technical services, such as feasibility studies, and project management for the NYPA Offshore Great Lakes Project. AWST is excited play a strategic role in this project and to help proliferate wind development in their home state of New York.
