Wind

Instrument Specification

Different projects require different instrument and tower types. The linchpin of most wind measurement campaigns is a tall tower instrumented with redundant anemometers and direction vanes at several heights, along with temperature and other sensors.

Increasingly, ground-based remote sensing instruments (sodar and lidar) are being deployed to provide data at additional locations and to reach heights to the top of the turbine rotor. [link to remote sensing]

Whatever the context, AWS Truepower adheres to strict instrumentation standards, resulting in high accuracy and data recovery.

Instrument Placement

Smart instrument placement aims to minimize the uncertainty in the expected energy production of the project. Placing monitoring towers and remote sensing instruments at locations spanning the full range of wind resources likely to be encountered by the turbines is key.

AWS Truepower’s experienced engineers and meteorologists can help site your equipment to meet this goal. Using openWind’s uncertainty module, we will design the optimal monitoring campaign, and quantify the reduction in uncertainty from placing towers in designated locations.

Installation and Verification

Our field engineers will install or oversee the installation of towers and remote sensing systems. We will also visit existing wind monitoring stations and verify the instrument location, height, orientation, and surroundings to the exacting standards required for bankable energy production reports.

Wind Data Management Dashboard

Our Wind Data Management Dashboard is a web platform that allows you to monitor and access your meteorological data securely and conveniently. AWS Truepower manages and monitors your tower data, ensuring high confidence in the quality and integrity of the data collected. Whether you have one tower or a fleet of towers, you can view and retrieve:

  • Statistics (mean speed, data recovery, shear, turbulence intensity, and temperature)
  • Plots (hourly and daily average wind speed, speed frequency distribution, wind rose)
  • Downloadable reports
  • Site commissioning forms and photographs
  • Instrument history, status, and faults
  • Raw and complied data
  • Quality-controlled data

Solar

Instrument Specification

Based on our experience and industry best practices, AWS Truepower designs custom solar resource measurement programs that operate in remote location and collect essential meteorological data. These systems can be as simple or as robust as necessary depending on the size of the project and the desired technology type.

Solar monitoring system (SMS) design is influenced by the size of the project, as well as the type of technology being built. Photovoltaic (PV) projects are contingent up the collection of global and diffuse radiation components whereas concentrated solar power (CSP) projects require the measurement of the direct normal component in order to accurately characterize the solar resource.

AWS Truepower will provide recommendations for equipment and as well as the recommended monitoring period in order to obtain the highest quality results for a long term solar resource assessment. In addition we will procure all the equipment and manage the installation, monitoring, data archiving, operations and regular maintenance to ensure all data is of the highest accuracy and quality.

Instrument Placement

The quality and representativeness of your data is only as good as your system placement. AWS Truepower will assist with the siting of the SMS in order to ensure representativeness of the project resource, site access, as well as to reduce any potential environmental impacts and system health issues. All deployed systems are readily movable solutions that will allow for the relocation of the instrumentation at any point of the measurement campaign. Once the measurement campaign at an individual location is complete, the system can be redeployed for new potential projects.

AWS Truepower’s experienced engineers and meteorologists will use a combination of ground based regional resources as well as aerial imagery to assess the most suitable location to install the system and reduce your overall measurement uncertainty.

Installation and Verification

Our field engineers will install and oversee the installation of all equipment at the desired location. A field verification will be performed using secondary standard instrumentation to ensure that the installed sensors are operating properly and remote data acquisitions are functional. In addition to new installations AWS can take over existing SMS that have already been deployed. Each system will undergo the same thorough field verification to ensure all instruments are operational.

Following the completion of the field verification, a commissioning form will be completed for each site, including high accuracy GPS positioning of the system, sensor types, calibration information, photos and a documentation of the overall installation and verification.
